A major train accident in India has left at least 120 people dead and over 800 injured. The accident happened in eastern India and the cause remains under investigation. The derailment involved two passenger trains and a third train carrying freight. Reports suggest that ten to twelve coaches of one train derailed, and debris from some of the mangled coaches fell onto a nearby track, causing another passenger train coming from the opposite direction to also derail. Rescue workers are continuing to search the wreckage for survivors. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tweeted his condolences and said all possible assistance was being offered. Despite the Indian government’s efforts to improve rail safety, several hundred accidents occur every year on India’s railways, which is the largest train network under one management in the world.
