Apple Consolidates Movie Trailers in Flagship TV App, Shutters iTunes App

Apple is making significant changes to its movie trailers offerings, consolidating them within its flagship TV app and shutting down the long-running iTunes Movie Trailers app. The move was hinted at on August 9, and since then, a banner reading Apple TV app is the new home of iTunes Movie Trailers has been displayed on both the iOS and tvOS apps.

According to reports, some US Apple TV users have noticed a new section labeled Watch the Latest Trailers within the TV app. This section features a main selection card with the original iTunes Movie Trailers logo, but it is now titled Movie & TV Trailers. However, users in the UK and potentially other regions do not yet have access to this section. When UK-based iPhone and iPad users click on the banner in the original iTunes Movie Trailers app, they are still redirected to the app, suggesting that the merge is not yet complete.

The iTunes Movie Trailers app was initially launched on iOS in the US in 2011, providing users with convenient access to Apple’s collection of movie trailers. By integrating this feature into the TV app, Apple aims to streamline its offerings and provide a more cohesive user experience.

This move follows Apple’s recent decision to shut down its My Photo Stream service on July 26. The service allowed users to upload their last 30 days’ worth of images, up to 1,000 photos, to iCloud for easy access on various devices. With the elimination of My Photo Stream, Apple is likely transitioning users to other photo management and storage options.

Additionally, earlier this year, Apple permanently closed its popular weather application, Dark Sky, in January. The company also discontinued Dark Sky’s application programming interface (API) for third-party weather apps on March 31, 2023, further emphasizing its shift toward offering its own weather solutions.

By consolidating its movie trailers into the TV app and discontinuing standalone apps like iTunes Movie Trailers, Apple aims to enhance the overall user experience and streamline its offerings. While these changes may require some adjustment for users, they signify Apple’s commitment to providing a more integrated and seamless digital ecosystem. As Apple continues to evolve and refine its services, users can expect further improvements and updates in the future.

Apple’s decision to consolidate movie trailers within its flagship TV app demonstrates the company’s strategy to create a more cohesive digital experience for users. The inclusion of a new section titled Watch the Latest Trailers within the TV app, albeit only available to some US users currently, showcases Apple’s dedication to providing convenient access to movie and TV trailers. With the closure of the iTunes Movie Trailers app, Apple is focusing on integrating its services to optimize user experience. This move follows previous decisions to shut down the My Photo Stream service and the Dark Sky weather application. While these changes may take some getting used to for users, they showcase Apple’s commitment to providing streamlined and integrated digital solutions.
