DC’s Wonder Woman Franchise Faces Uncertainty as Reports Clash Over Gal Gadot’s Future
The future of DC’s Wonder Woman franchise has been thrown into uncertainty amid conflicting reports about Gal Gadot’s involvement. As a fan of DC movies, I have patiently awaited the franchise’s development into a cohesive cinematic universe on par with Marvel. However, the ongoing mixed messaging from actors, filmmakers, and insiders has been a source of secondhand embarrassment.
Recently, Gal Gadot made headlines when she claimed to have had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran to discuss their collaboration on Wonder Woman 3. This news, if true, would be cause for celebration among fans. However, other reports have emerged contradicting Gadot’s statements. Variety, citing an anonymous insider, reported that the third installment is not currently in development, no definitive discussions took place, and no promises were made. Gadot’s comments to Flaunt magazine presented a different picture entirely.
This inconsistency is disappointing, as I had hoped these conflicting narratives would be a thing of the past under the new leadership of Co-CEOs of DC Studios, Gunn and Safran. Unfortunately, this pattern of mixed messages is reminiscent of the previous news cycle surrounding Black Adam, where rumors swirled about Henry Cavill’s potential return as Superman. Cavill even made an official appearance as the character in a post-credit scene for Black Adam, only to retract the announcement later.
While I didn’t entirely blame Gunn for the Cavill situation, as he had just taken the reins at DC Studios, it seemed logical that rebooting the franchise might involve recasting Superman. Indeed, Gunn has announced that David Corenswet will portray Clark Kent in 2025’s Superman: Legacy. Now, with Gadot’s conflicting statements, it feels like the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is haunted by its past, and Gunn is grappling with these recurring issues from previous regimes.
Comparatively, Marvel is also facing challenges with its cinematic universe, with the finale of Secret Invasion receiving low ratings and accusations of abuse involving two of its stars. However, Marvel’s issues seem less noticeable and do not generate the same level of negative publicity as the ongoing contradictions at DC.
To achieve future success, DC must shed this negative optics and rectify its communication problems. These frequent reversals and reaffirmations undermine the studio’s ability to create a cohesive and compelling cinematic universe. Perhaps the reports contradicting Gadot are incorrect, as they rely on anonymous sources while her statements come directly from the respected actress herself. Hopefully, this confusion surrounding Wonder Woman 3 is simply a case of misunderstanding rather than indicative of ongoing turmoil within DC.
Fans eagerly await the resolution of these conflicting reports and hope that DC can finally find stability under Gunn’s leadership.
