Former Jadavpur University Student Arrested for Murder of First-Year Student
In a shocking incident, a former student of Jadavpur University (JU) in Kolkata has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of a first-year student, Swapnadeep Kundu. The accused, identified as Sourabh Chowdhury, had completed his postgraduation in maths from the university in 2022 but continued to stay at the boys’ main hostel and unofficially functioned as the person in charge of the hostel mess committee.
The arrest of Sourabh, who is now being treated as the prime suspect, came shortly after the Jadavpur Police lodged a First Information Report (FIR) under sections related to murder against unknown persons. It was revealed that Sourabh was named in the FIR. The West Bengal Human Rights Commission has also sought a report on the incident by August 24.
Authorities are considering two more individuals, one student and one former student, as persons of interest in the ongoing investigation. However, the police are still attempting to trace five additional boarders who are currently missing.
According to Joint CP (crime) Sankha Shubra Chakrabarty, Swapnadeep’s father, Ramprasad Kundu, filed a complaint expressing his belief that some boarders of the main hostel were responsible for his son’s death. The FIR was based on this complaint. Sourabh, during police interrogation, denied any involvement in the crime but admitted to securing Swapnadeep a place in the hostel, as per a police source.
