Lomas Brown, one of the Detroit Lions’ greatest players, will be inducted into the team’s Pride of the Lions in 2023. The announcement came as a surprise during the second quarter of the Lions’ preseason game against the New York Giants at Ford Field. A special tribute video was shown, revealing Brown’s upcoming induction during the team’s homecoming game on October 30 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
As the news unfolded, Brown, who was providing play-by-play commentary from the press box, was in for a pleasant shock. The Pride of the Lions honor is bestowed upon the most exceptional players in the history of the franchise, making it a well-deserved recognition for Brown.
Detroit Lions President and CEO, Rod Wood, expressed pride in inducting Lomas Brown into the Pride of the Lions, highlighting his significant contributions to the team’s success in the 90s. Wood emphasized that Brown not only had a remarkable NFL career but also continued to have a positive impact in the community. According to Wood, Brown is an essential figure connecting fans, Lions Legends, and the team’s history and future.
Brown’s induction into the Pride of the Lions marks another milestone in his storied career with the franchise. He already holds a place in the team’s 75th-anniversary and All-Time teams. Out of his impressive 18-season NFL journey, Brown spent 11 of them playing for the Lions. While winning a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in his final season, his most significant personal achievements were undoubtedly with the Lions. He earned five All-Pro nods and made six consecutive Pro Bowl appearances (seven if his time with the Arizona Cardinals is included).
Before Brown, the most recent inductee into the Pride of the Lions was former linebacker Chris Spielman in 2021. The list of esteemed players in the Pride of the Lions includes football icons like Roger Brown, Alex Karras, Herman Moore, Lem Barney, Jack Christiansen, Dutch Clark, Lou Creekmur, Jason Hansen, Dick Night Train Lane, Yale Lary, Bobby Layne, Dick LeBeau, Charlie Sanders, Joe Schmidt, Dick Stanfel, Doak Walker, Alex Wojciechowicz, and the legendary Barry Sanders. Notably, Barry Sanders is set to have a statue unveiled at Ford Field just before the Lions’ home opener.
The Lions made a wise decision to select Lomas Brown as the sixth overall pick in the 1985 NFL draft, and his presence on the field was instrumental in the team’s success. Now, his exceptional contributions have led him to be immortalized in the Pride of the Lions, joining the ranks of the franchise’s greatest players. The induction ceremony promises to be a memorable highlight during the Lions’ homecoming game, bringing pride and joy to both Lomas Brown and fans alike.
