The Meghalaya High Court (MHC) has reprimanded the state government for allowing the export of coal without verifying the source or origin of such coal. The MHC’s division bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjb Banerjee and Justice W Diengdoh, expressed concern while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Champer M Sangma. The MHC noted that the state did not undertake enough measures to identify the source of the coal, despite receiving multiple warnings from central agencies and the Union Finance Ministry. The MHC also claimed that the state government had been involved in illegal coal mining and its transportation, casting aspersions on their motives. The next hearing for the case will be held on June 15.
