Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, India, has expressed her support for the wrestlers who are demanding the arrest of the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) chief, Brijbhushan Sharan Singh. They allege that Singh sexually harassed women athletes. Banerjee, who is also a politician from the Trinamool Congress party, led a candlelight march in Kolkata to show solidarity with the protesters. In her speech, she called their cause a fight for life, justice, and independence and promised to help the wrestlers until they find justice. Banerjee demanded the immediate arrest of Singh, who is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and has denied the accusations against him. In May, police filed two complaints against Singh, including one under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which is based on a minor’s complaint. The wrestlers initially protested against Singh in January.
