UBL Recalls Contaminated Beer Cases, Ensures Consumer Safety
United Breweries Limited (UBL), the manufacturer of popular Kingfisher beer, has taken swift action to recall nearly 35,000 beer cases that were suspected to be contaminated. The company has assured consumers that most of the affected cases, including bottles and tin cans, have already been retrieved from excise depots. The excise department has also confirmed that there have been no reports of adverse events resulting from the consumption of the contaminated beer across the state.
The issue arose after sediments were discovered in some beer bottles stored in depots. The deputy commissioner of excise, Bengaluru Urban, promptly ordered a hold on the sale of beer bottles and cans produced at UBL’s Nanjangud brewery in Mysuru district. The affected bottles had been packed and dispatched on July 15, according to officials.
UBL’s spokesperson attributed the problem to equipment malfunction at the brewery. They emphasized that the issue has been resolved. The company raised the alarm when one of their employees noticed the problem during the bottling process. Although the majority of the bottles, around 95%, were still in the depots and successfully recalled, there is a possibility that a few bottles were sold to the public. In the interest of consumer safety, UBL immediately informed the excise department and requested a halt in product sales.
Regarding the nature of the sediments, C Gouri Shankar, Director of Manufacturing Operations at United Breweries, clarified that they were remnants of protein particles. Beer contains protein, and the malfunctioning equipment at the bottling plant led to the contamination of these particles, resulting in sedimentation after a few days. As soon as the issue was raised by their employee, UBL took immediate action to address the problem, maintaining their commitment to global standards. However, they prioritized consumer health and thus urged the excise department to suspend sales.
