India’s director of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, has been elected as the third Vice-President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The UN body, which operates as an authoritative voice on weather, climate and water, announced the appointment on its official Twitter handle. The WMO’s decision commended Mohapatra for his understanding of meteorology and his leadership skills. Mohapatra has been praised by the IMD for his new appointment, which is expected to enhance India’s role in the WMO’s ongoing mission to provide international guidance towards the management of meteorology.
