A 65-year-old woman from Bihar, India has been given a new lease of life after undergoing a short-term new-age medical procedure to treat her spinal fracture at a leading private hospital in Delhi. Instead of traditional surgery, the doctors performed a vertebra stentoplasty procedure due to the patient’s intense pain and the risk factors involved. The procedure involves inserting an expandable cage made of titanium into the collapsed/fractured vertebra, expanding it and restoring its height by filling it with bone cement. A team of doctors led by Dr Kaushal Kant Mishra, director of orthopaedics and joint replacement, performed the surgery in a mere 25 minutes with the help of the new-age medical procedure. The patient was discharged within a day and can now walk freely without any complications. The stentoplasty procedure was chosen over the traditional method due to the patient’s medical history of osteoporosis, hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease and osteoarthritis, which made her surgery high-risk.
