Members of Parliament (MPs) in India paid tribute to freedom fighters of the 1942 Quit India Movement and the victims of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the 78th anniversary of the tragic event. The Lok Sabha observed a minute of silence to honor the sacrifices made by those who fought for India’s independence. Japanese Ambassador to India Hiroshi Suzuki also attended the ceremony in parliament.
The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which took place during World War II, serve as a solemn reminder of the devastating power of nuclear weapons and the necessity for lasting peace. On August 6 and 9, 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively. The bombings resulted in the destruction of around 90% of the cities and claimed the lives of over 300,000 individuals, including those who suffered from radiation exposure. Japan surrendered a few days after the second attack, effectively ending World War II.
Simultaneously, MPs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held a demonstration on the Parliament premises to commemorate the anniversary of the Quit India Movement. They raised slogans and displayed posters conveying messages against corruption, dynasty politics, and appeasement policies. BJP leaders such as Nishikant Dubey and Ravi Shankar Prasad criticized the Congress party, accusing it of corruption and promoting dynastic politics.
During a press conference, Dubey emphasized the importance of creating awareness against these issues, as they are detrimental to the democratic fabric of the country. He cited corruption, dynasty rule, and appeasement as significant challenges that need to be eradicated for the betterment of India.
Ravi Shankar Prasad echoed these sentiments, calling for an end to rampant family rule in politics, corruption, and appeasement politics. He stressed the need to safeguard the democratic principles of the country by addressing these issues.
