Dallas, Texas recently suffered a ransomware attack that affected thousands of people and put children’s identities at risk. The attack, which occurred three months ago, allowed hackers to access sensitive information such as names, addresses, and medical data through city government servers. The group responsible, known as Royal, claimed to have encrypted critical data and threatened to release it online. As a result of the cyber intrusion, services like 911 dispatch for police and fire departments, municipal courts, and water utilities were impacted.
According to recent disclosures by the City of Dallas, a total of 26,212 individuals were affected by the attack. Shockingly, some city employees have already reported instances of identity theft. Even more concerning is that the personal information of their children has also been stolen. This raises concerns among cybersecurity experts who highlight the long-term implications for children as their stolen information may resurface when they come of age.
Jim McDade, the president of the Dallas Fire Fighters Association, expressed his disappointment with the city’s response to the attack, deeming it as sluggish. McDade, along with his 1,500 members, had taken precautionary measures by obtaining identity theft protection in May but are still dismayed by the overall handling of the incident. His own personal information was compromised, and similarly, the children and spouses of other city employees have fallen victim to this breach.
Cybersecurity expert Andrew Sternke warns that the stolen information is likely to be sold on the dark web, leaving the affected individuals vulnerable to further exploitation. Sternke emphasizes that the consequences may extend beyond the immediate impact and continue into adulthood.
The City of Dallas released a statement defending the time it took to report the findings of the ransomware attack, citing extensive investigation and data review as the reason for the delay. As a gesture of compensation, the city will offer two years of free credit monitoring to those individuals whose personal information was compromised.
