US Open 2023 Sets Record with $65M Prize Money and Equal Pay

The US Open 2023 is set to make history with a record-breaking prize money of $65 million and equal pay for male and female players. This announcement by the US Tennis Association (USTA) highlights their commitment to promoting equality and recognizing the achievements of both genders in the sport.

Compared to the estimated $60 million payout in 2022, this significant increase in prize money showcases the tournament’s determination to reward players’ efforts and cover more of their expenses. The USTA’s decision to bolster the amount of expenses covered for players reflects their appreciation for athletes who fight through qualifiers to earn a place in the main draw.

Taking place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre, the main singles draws will commence on August 28 and conclude with the women’s and men’s finals on September 10 and 11, respectively. Notably, this year’s US Open coincides with its 50th anniversary, making it an auspicious occasion to award equal prize money.

While both the men’s and women’s singles champions will receive $3 million in prize money, marking a 15% increase from the $2.6 million awarded in 2018, it is worth mentioning that this amount is still less than the $3.9 million each winner received in 2019 before the pandemic hit.

The significance of this achievement is not lost on the USTA and the tennis community as they recognize the pioneering efforts of Billie Jean King in establishing gender equality in tennis. Brian Hainline, USTA Chairman of the Board and President, expressed his admiration for King’s impact both on and off the court, stating that there is no better time to honor her legacy than on the anniversary of this historic milestone.

Billie Jean King herself emphasized that the message of equality goes beyond monetary rewards, highlighting the ongoing fight for equality and freedom that every generation must engage in.

In addition to the increased prize money, improvements have been made to the overall player compensation and benefits. For the first time, all competitors will receive $1,000 travel vouchers, and they will also have the option of staying in a second free room in an official tournament hotel or receiving a stipend of $600 per day for alternative housing, doubling the previous amount.

Other enhancements include increased meal allowances, racket stringing services for all players, and higher prize money for the doubles champions, which will now amount to $700,000 per team compared to $688,000 in 2022.

With a total prize money of $65 million, the US Open leads the pack among Grand Slam events this year when accounting for expenses. Wimbledon, the French Open, and the Australian Open offered purses of $56.5 million, $54 million, and $53 million respectively, based on exchange rates at the time.

In conclusion, the US Open 2023 promises to be a groundbreaking event, not only in terms of prize money records but also in its continued efforts to champion equality in tennis. By paying both male and female players equally, the tournament sets an example for other sporting events to follow, encouraging inclusivity and celebrating the achievements of athletes of all genders.
