Rare Parkinson’s Surgery Performed by Doctors at Ganga Ram Hospital

Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi recently performed a rare surgery to help a Parkinson’s disease patient. Savitri Devi, a 51-year-old woman, had been suffering from the disease for nine years, and despite treatment, her health continued to deteriorate. The medical team ultimately opted to perform deep brain stimulation, which stimulates specific areas of the brain, acting like a pacemaker. The procedure, which helps control diseases like Parkinson’s and other mental conditions, involves electrodes being passed through two small holes in the skull while the patient is awake, and a battery is later inserted in the chest wall. The surgery was a success, and the patient is now leading a normal life with no side effects from medication.
