West Indies’ wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran has been fined 15 percent of his match fee and given a demerit point for criticizing the umpires during the second T20I against India in Guyana. Pooran breached Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct by publicly criticizing the umpires for using a player review for a decision he believed was clearly not out.

The incident occurred in the 4th over of the India innings when a LBW decision was reviewed. Pooran expressed his discontent with the umpires’ decision, which led to the charges being leveled against him by the on-field umpires Leslie Reifer and Nigel Duguid, third umpire Gregory Brathwaite, and fourth official Patrick Gustard.

As per Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, Pooran was found guilty of breaching the code relating to public criticism of an incident occurring in an international match. However, he admitted to the offense and accepted the proposed reprimand by match referee Richie Richardson, thus avoiding the need for a formal hearing.

In addition to the fine, Pooran also received one demerit point, marking his first offense in a 24-month period. Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Despite the disciplinary action against him, Pooran played a pivotal role in West Indies’ victory in the second T20I, helping his team take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Chasing a target of 153, Pooran scored an impressive 67 runs off just 40 balls. He came to bat in the first over after West Indies lost two early wickets, and his contribution was vital in securing the win.

West Indies’ ninth-wicket partnership between Alzarri Joseph and Akeal Hossein also played a crucial role in the victory, taking their team to triumph with an over to spare, despite India’s late resurgence with the ball.

Nicholas Pooran’s fine and demerit point highlight the importance of maintaining the integrity of the game and respecting the decisions made by the umpires. While players may have differing opinions on certain decisions, it is essential to express them in a respectful and appropriate manner. Such disciplinary measures serve as a reminder to all players to adhere to the rules and regulations set by the ICC.

The series between West Indies and India continues, with three more matches remaining. It remains to be seen whether any further disciplinary actions will be necessary or if both teams can focus solely on their performance on the field.
