Ishika Kumar, a wrestler from Punjab University, won a gold medal in the 55 kg weight category of the Khelo India University Games, held in Uttar Pradesh. With a family background in wrestling, Ishika expressed that sports is in her blood. She hails from the Sonipat district in Haryana but now resides in Delhi and practices at the Chhatrasal Stadium, known as the nursery of wrestling. Ishika is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and aims to participate in the Olympics representing the country. She practices for eight hours daily and has earlier won medals at the Khelo India School Games as well as the Cadet and Junior National Championships. Sandeep Kumar, Ishika’s father, is a wrestling enthusiast and encouraged Ishika to pursue the sport in which her grandfather and great-grandfather were also wrestlers. Sandeep appreciated the arrangements made for female athletes during the Khelo India University Games and believes that such events are crucial for the future of aspiring athletes in India.
