Newborn Baby Saved with Groundbreaking Cooling Therapy
A team of doctors led by Dr. Suhaim Afsar and Dr. B. Chethan from Motherhood Hospital in Mysuru successfully treated and saved the life of a newborn baby. The baby boy was brought to the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) after being referred from a private hospital in Vijayanagar.
The baby’s delivery on May 21 required resuscitation due to acute strangulation of the umbilical cord around his neck. Recognizing the critical condition, the referring hospital reached out to Motherhood Hospital for specialized treatment. A team of neonatologists and nurses immediately went to Vijayanagar in the NICU ON WHEELS and transported the baby to the Motherhood Hospital.
For the next seven days, the baby received a groundbreaking treatment called Therapeutic Hypothermia, also known as cooling therapy. Over the first three days of life, the baby’s temperature was maintained at 33.50 degrees Celsius using a one-of-a-kind cooling unit known as CRITI COOL available only in Mysuru. The baby was carefully monitored and nursed in a suitable environment with ventilation.
Dr. Suhaim Afsar explained that the baby had multiple systemic issues stemming from an inflammatory cascade caused by the acute strangulation. It was crucial for the team to stabilize the baby and transfer him to their center for holistic care, minimizing the risk of brain damage. The baby’s condition steadily improved with regular monitoring and care provided at the NICU, ultimately leading to his discharge on the 8th day of life with a normal brain MRI—a significant achievement.
Dr. B. Chethan emphasized the importance of addressing this medical emergency promptly. The team’s swift action in retrieving the baby allowed for timely therapeutic hypothermia treatment. Cooling therapy has proven to be a safe and effective treatment for infants who experienced oxygen deprivation during birth.
This groundbreaking case highlights the expertise and dedication of the medical professionals at Motherhood Hospital in Mysuru. Their successful use of cutting-edge cooling therapy demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to providing advanced and comprehensive care for newborns in critical situations.
By employing innovative treatments like therapeutic hypothermia, the team at Motherhood Hospital continues to save lives and give newborns a fresh lease on life. The successful outcome for this baby boy not only showcases the hospital’s capabilities but also serves as a remarkable testament to medical advancements in neonatology.
It is undoubtedly a story of hope and resilience, reminding us of the incredible miracles that can be achieved through medical expertise and advanced technologies. The impact of this groundbreaking cooling therapy on the newborn baby’s life is immeasurable, serving as a beacon of hope for families facing similar challenges.
