Citizens in India have the right to change their names according to personal preferences, ruled the Allahabad High Court. The decision came after a writ petition was filed by Sameer Rao, who challenged the UP Madhyamik Siksha Parishad’s rejection of his application to change his name in his high school and intermediate examination certificates. Justice Ajay Bhanot stated that this right falls within the ambit of the Indian Constitution and any rejection of such a request violates fundamental rights guaranteed to the petitioner under the constitution. The court directed the UP Madhyamik Siksha Parishad to allow Sameer Rao to change his name from Shahnawaz to Mohammad Sameer Rao, and issue fresh high school and intermediate certificates reflecting the change. The original certificates had recorded Sameer Rao’s name as Shahnawaz in 2013 and 2015.
