Pulaski County Unveils Designs for Affordable Tiny Homes in Effort to Combat Chronic Homelessness

The Pulaski County government has revealed preliminary designs for affordable housing aimed at addressing chronic homelessness. These designs form part of the county’s plan to establish the Pulaski County Community Village in southwest Pulaski County.

The designs showcase various styles of tiny homes, as well as a proposed site plan for the village’s first phase. The initial phase will also include a health center and gathering hall. The Community Village’s advisory committee chair, Roger Marlin, stated that once all five phases are complete, the village is expected to comprise 400 homes.

According to the plans, the tiny homes will feature a covered porch, a bedroom, a living area, and a kitchenette. The schematic design also includes a communal kitchen and restrooms throughout the neighborhood. Additionally, phase two involves the creation of an operations manual with county oversight, while phase three entails preparing a request for proposal for nonprofits.

To oversee the village, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization will be responsible, and the county intends to launch the request for proposal in the fall. Marlin emphasized the importance of finding a nonprofit to operate and manage the village. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far, highlighting that work crews have commenced laying the foundations.

Pulaski County Judge Barry Hyde expressed enthusiasm about the progress, stating, I’m excited for the progress we’re making. Hyde further added that the bidding for the project’s dirt work has recently closed, with construction estimated to begin in the coming weeks.

Marlin and the advisory committee hope that the plan’s announcement will attract interest from potential volunteers, designers, and architects for the tiny homes. Marlin emphasized that the village provides an opportunity for different architects to showcase their creativity in engineering and designing the tiny homes. He also mentioned the significant interest already shown by design professionals and engineers.

With these developments, Pulaski County aims to make substantial strides in addressing chronic homelessness by providing permanent and affordable housing solutions. By creating a community-oriented environment, the county strives to support those coming out of homelessness and offer a chance to rebuild their lives.
