Tunisia’s Trade Union Chief Urges West to Support Migrants as Mass Expulsion Continues

Tunisia’s trade union chief, Noureddine Taboubi, has called on Western nations to provide support to migrants arriving in Libya as the Tunisian authorities continue with a mass expulsion. Speaking at a political rally in Sfax, Taboubi asserted that the West should not view Tunisia as its border guards and urged for real development in countries of origin to enable people to live with dignity and prosperity. Referring to Tunisia’s new Prime Minister, Ahmed Hachani, Taboubi questioned whether he would have actual power and emphasized the need for the country’s policies and strategies to change rather than just its leadership.

Taboubi’s remarks come amid Tunisia’s ongoing economic challenges, including shortages and a cash crunch caused by a debt burden of 80% of GDP. Currently, the state buys basic products before reselling them at subsidized prices, exacerbating financial strains. Tunisia has faced political upheaval since President Kais Saied assumed all powers on 25 July, following his democratic election in October 2019. Saied can dismiss the head of government or ministers at any time, leading to questions about the distribution of authority.

The Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) has been vocal about mobilizing support for migrants, with 250 UGTT members gathering in Sfax to commemorate activists who died during the French protectorate in Tunisia in 1947. Taboubi’s call for Western nations to shoulder responsibility in addressing migration issues and promoting development in countries of origin reflects the UGTT’s stance. Additionally, his skepticism about Tunisia’s new Prime Minister highlights concerns about the effectiveness of the country’s leadership and the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing challenges.

The current situation in Tunisia underscores the importance of finding sustainable solutions to economic and social issues. Tunisia not only requires immediate interventions to alleviate shortages and financial strains but also long-term policies that address structural problems. The support of Western nations in fostering development and offering assistance to migrants could have a significant impact on both the region and international relations. However, it remains to be seen how Tunisia’s leadership will navigate these challenges and whether they can effectively address the concerns raised by the trade union chief.
