Boston Red Sox Assign John Schreiber as Starting Pitcher Against Toronto Blue Jays

The Boston Red Sox have made the decision to name John Schreiber as their starting pitcher for the upcoming game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday. This will be Schreiber’s second time acting as an opener for the team.

Schreiber previously served as the opener in a game against the Atlanta Braves on July 25. During that outing, he allowed one run, two hits, and one walk in just one inning of play before being replaced by Nick Pivetta as the bulk reliever in the second inning.

Since Schreiber’s return from the injured list, he has struggled to find his form. He had been sidelined due to a right teres major strain and was placed on the 60-day injured list from May 16 to July 25. In his four appearances since his return, Schreiber has given up five runs, seven hits, two walks, and one hit by pitch while striking out three in a total of 4 â…” innings. Most notably, in his last game against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, he allowed four runs in just 1-plus innings of play.

Nick Pivetta is expected to serve as the bulk reliever in the game against the Blue Jays. However, if the Blue Jays opt for a left-handed lineup, the Red Sox may turn to lefty Chris Murphy, who has been available since Saturday and hasn’t pitched since. Pivetta took over for Schreiber in the July 25 game and pitched five scoreless innings. He has been successful in the bulk reliever role following an opener since late June. Additionally, he started a game against the Mariners on Monday and delivered an impressive performance, striking out 10 batters in 7 â…“ innings while surrendering three runs, five hits, and no walks.

When asked why Pivetta wasn’t chosen as the starting pitcher considering his recent success, Red Sox manager Alex Cora commented that Pivetta has been solid throughout the season and will pitch whenever the team needs him to. Cora believes having both Pivetta and Murphy available provides an advantage as it forces the opposition to make decisions when finalizing their lineup. The uncertainty surrounding which pitcher will enter the game can work in the Red Sox’s favor, giving them the upper hand.

On the opposing side, the Toronto Blue Jays will start talented righty José Berríos, who currently holds a record of 8-7 with a 3.31 ERA.

With John Schreiber being named the starting pitcher and Nick Pivetta ready to contribute as the bulk reliever, the Red Sox are looking to secure a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. The game promises to be an exciting matchup between two competitive teams.
