Zelle Scam Resurfaces: Bank Customers Fooled by Imposters, Defying Fraud Warnings

A notorious Zelle scam has made a comeback, with bank imposters successfully tricking customers into transferring money through the quick pay app. Despite banks issuing fraud warnings to Zelle users, it seems that the scammers are staying one step ahead.

The fraudsters are well aware that Bank of America sends out alerts when it detects suspicious money transfers. However, these imposters have found a way to convince victims to ignore these warnings. Their method is simple – they tell the victims that they will receive an alert but instruct them to disregard it.

One victim, Rachael Adler, vividly recalls her encounter with one such imposter. She received a text asking if she had charged $432 at a Walmart in Texas. When she replied no, she immediately received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Bank of America fraud department. The man on the line informed her that someone was using Zelle to withdraw money from her account. Panicked, she followed his instructions to send the money back to herself through Zelle, unaware that she was actually transferring her funds directly to the criminals.

But the imposter didn’t stop there. He went a step further and warned her that she would receive a fraud alert from Bank of America, urging her to ignore it. True to his words, Adler received a genuine fraud alert on her phone, but she brushed it aside as instructed. Another text came through, saying beware and asking if she still wanted to proceed.

In response to the Zelle scam surge last year, Bank of America began sending fraud alerts to Zelle users. However, it appears that the scammers have now incorporated these alerts into their scheme, making it even harder for victims to distinguish between the legitimate warnings and the imposters’ ploys.

Adler, understandably shaken by her experience, now finds it hard to trust any communication supposedly from her bank. Bank of America emphasizes that they would never ask a client to send money to themselves or anyone else. The bank warns that fraudulent communications often display urgency, typos, and requests for money. Scammers continually improve their methods to appear authentic, making it vital for clients to remain vigilant.
