St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in downtown Salisbury is expanding its music ministry by offering new opportunities and scholarships to young singers in the community. Led by Director of Music Ministries Stephen Williams, the church aims to cultivate a vibrant music program and provide a platform for youth to develop their singing abilities.
Last year, St. Luke’s saw the success of its children’s choir, which had over a dozen active participants. The choir, comprising children aged 6-12, performed at several worship services and completed the first level of coursework in the Royal School of Church Music curriculum. This training program promotes individual growth within a thriving singing community.
This year, St. Luke’s is introducing a new ensemble called TeenVoices for older youth aged 12-18. TeenVoices will offer professional vocal training in a collaborative and enjoyable environment. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their talents at St. Luke’s and in the wider community.
The music ministry at St. Luke’s warmly welcomes students from the greater Salisbury-Rowan area to participate in vocal ensembles. The program encourages diverse backgrounds and experiences, with no tuition requirement. Rehearsals for the children’s choir will commence on August 16 at 5:15 p.m., while TeenVoices rehearsals will begin on August 20 at 4 p.m.
Additionally, St. Luke’s is relaunching its Choral Scholars ministry, which offers educational scholarships to college students and young adults with choral experience. These scholars will join the Chancel Choir for the academic year, enriching their musical education.
Director of Music Ministries Stephen Williams emphasizes the importance of choir in fostering camaraderie and teamwork. Despite coming from various towns, schools, and backgrounds, choir allows singers to find commonalities and create exceptional music together. Williams describes the choir as a place for friends, music, learning, performing, accomplishment, and connections.
For those interested in these musical opportunities, registration forms and applications can be found on St. Luke’s website at www.SLS.church/music. St. Luke’s Episcopal Church is located at 131 W. Council St. in downtown Salisbury.
