A landslide in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand has caused major disruption on the Gangotri National Highway, leaving devotees stranded. The incident occurred near the Forest Department office at Lisa Depot, where a portion of the highway collapsed due to the landslide. Approximately 60 meters of the road has caved in, creating a significant hurdle for vehicular movement.
According to officials, the affected area is in proximity to an airstrip considered strategically important. The nearby Tehri Dam is believed to be the main cause of the landslide. As a precautionary measure, authorities have set up a signboard to warn commuters and prevent any untoward incidents.
The Border Roads Organisation has informed higher officials about the situation, emphasizing the need for immediate action. In addition to this landslide, another section of the highway, approximately 500 meters ahead of Bhatwadi, has been closed to traffic since morning due to falling debris. This closure has further compounded the difficulties faced by devotees undertaking the Gangotri Dham Yatra, leaving them stranded along the route.
However, in some positive news, officials have announced that the road near Nandaprayag and Chhinka on the Badrinath National Highway, which was previously blocked by debris, has been reopened.
These recent incidents highlight the challenges faced by both devotees and authorities due to natural disasters and unstable road conditions. Efforts are being made to address the situation and restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
