Driver Sentenced to Four Years in Jail for Fatally Striking Cyclist in East London

A driver who fatally struck a young cyclist in East London in July 2020 has been sentenced to four years in prison. Syed Minhaz Ahmed, 32, appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, August 4, where he was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

The incident occurred on Friday, July 24, 2020, when Ahmed was driving at over twice the speed limit on Romford Road. His car collided with 31-year-old Jay Kristiansen, throwing him from his bike. Despite the efforts of emergency services, Jay succumbed to his injuries the following day at the Royal London Hospital.

Ahmed did not stop at the scene of the accident, and his car was later found abandoned. He turned himself in to the police 33 hours later. Ahmed’s reckless actions and disregard for public safety resulted in the tragic death of a young man, leaving his family and friends devastated.

During the trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court in March, CCTV evidence revealed that Ahmed had been driving at over 65 mph in a 30 mph zone. The jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict, leading to his conviction for causing death by dangerous driving.

In addition to his prison sentence, Ahmed has been disqualified from driving for six years. Once his disqualification period ends, he will be required to take an extended retest. This ruling serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of dangerous driving and the importance of adhering to speed limits.

Members of Jay’s family expressed their grief and shared fond memories of him. They described him as a funny and caring individual who had a great love for animals. Jay had hopes and dreams for the future, including starting a family of his own. Sadly, these aspirations will never be realized.

The family stated that justice has finally been served for their beloved Jay, but their loss and pain will never fade. They vowed to keep his memory alive and emphasized that life without him will never be the same.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact reckless driving can have on innocent lives. It is essential for drivers to prioritize public safety and adhere to speed limits at all times. The loss of Jay Kristiansen highlights the need for increased awareness and responsibility on the roads.
