Korean Researchers Develop Advanced 3D Fuel Cells for High-Power Drones and Urban Air Vehicles

Researchers at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) have made a significant breakthrough in fuel cell technology, developing advanced 3D fuel cells that can generate 40 percent more power than conventional cells of the same size. This development opens up new possibilities for high-power drones and urban air vehicles, which require reliable and sustained power outputs.

Fuel cells are considered a clean and efficient source of electricity. They work by converting hydrogen and oxygen into electricity through an electrochemical reaction, producing heat and water as by-products. However, the high cost and limited durability of fuel cells have hindered their widespread adoption as a mainstream energy source.

To address these challenges, the KIST researchers have developed a new process for structuring the components of fuel cells in a 3D arrangement, as opposed to the conventional 2D flat structure. By doing so, they have found that cracks formed in the electrode layer can serve as channels for effectively removing excess water that may degrade the fuel cell’s performance over time. This improved water management capability enhances the fuel cell’s lifespan.

In addition to increased durability, the advanced 3D fuel cells are also more efficient, generating a higher voltage at the same current compared to conventional cells. This efficiency improvement is crucial for high-power applications such as drones and urban air vehicles, which require sustained and reliable power outputs.

Professor Yoo Sung-jong, principal research scientist of the center for hydrogen-fuel cell research at KIST, stated that this novel fuel cell technology could drive further progress in developing aerial mobility systems. By integrating these advanced fuel cells into transportation, eco-friendly solutions can be accelerated, contributing to a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.

The researchers are planning to collaborate with commercial partners to bring this technology to market. This development also aligns with the South Korean government’s green energy transition plan, which aims to replace diesel buses with hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles by 2030.

Furthermore, the government projects that hydrogen power generation will account for more than 7 percent of national output by 2036. With the support of the government, the infrastructure for hydrogen utilization is expected to significantly improve, making fuel cells more accessible to the public.

Moving forward, the KIST research team will continue to refine their 3D electrode structure technology to reduce the amount of catalyst used and further improve durability. These efforts will build upon their findings published in the peer-reviewed journal Advanced Materials.

The development of these advanced 3D fuel cells represents a significant step towards revolutionizing high-power applications such as drones and urban air vehicles. By harnessing the clean and efficient energy generated by fuel cells, we can drive the adoption of eco-friendly transportation solutions and work towards a greener future.
