Osborn Neighborhood Alliance, a community organization in Detroit, is spearheading a housing program aimed at revitalizing the city while providing affordable housing options. The program involves the renovation of three vacant duplex homes on Mapleridge Avenue, near Gratiot Avenue, which will be sold at a discounted rate.

The primary objective of the initiative is not only to sell houses to families but also to create a wealth-building strategy for moderate-income families. As part of this strategy, qualified homebuyers with an income at or below 80% of the median income will have the opportunity to become occupied landlords. They will live in one unit of the duplex while renting out the other unit to individuals with Section 8 housing vouchers or those with an income of approximately 60% of the median income.

Each of the six fully renovated units will feature three bedrooms and two bathrooms. This project marks a significant milestone for the Osborn Neighborhood, as it represents the positive transformation and revival of the community.

Bishop Daryl Harris, a longtime resident of the Osborn Neighborhood, expressed his excitement about seeing the neighborhood bounce back. Having witnessed both the challenges and the improvements within the community, he emphasized the importance of the current positive developments.

Besides the Osborn Neighborhood Alliance, various partners, including the business alliance and community organizations like Matrix Human Services, have played a crucial role in supporting the project. Their collective efforts have garnered attention and support for the neighborhood’s revitalization.

The Detroit Land Bank, an organization focused on restoring vacant properties, is also involved in the initiative. The CEO of the Detroit City Land Bank Authority, Tammy Daniels, highlighted the importance of collaboration in restoring properties and commended the duplex project as a prime example of community teamwork.

To finance the renovations, the project received $500,000 in Community Development Block grant funding from Detroit’s Housing and Revitalization Department. Additionally, a contribution of $288,000 came from Strategic Neighborhood Fund grants awarded by Invest Detroit. The Osborn Neighborhood Alliance also secured a construction loan from Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC).

Renovations for the duplex homes are expected to be completed by the end of 2023. This timeline reflects the culmination of eight years of hard work by the local community to bring the project to fruition.

The Osborn Neighborhood Alliance’s affordable housing program stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, community engagement, and innovative strategies. By offering affordable homeownership opportunities and incorporating wealth-building elements, the program aims to uplift the neighborhood and create a sustainable future for its residents. Through support from various entities and organizations, the Osborn Neighborhood is well on its way to revitalizing Detroit and setting an inspiring example for other communities to follow.
