Former NBA player Terrence Williams has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his involvement in a $5 million health insurance fraud scheme, according to New York prosecutors. Williams, 36, pleaded guilty to defrauding the league’s health insurance plan in August of last year. Alongside defrauding the plan, he also stole identities and threatened a witness, furthering his criminal activities. Williams, who played for the New Jersey Nets and Houston Rockets, was one of 18 former NBA players charged in this elaborate fraud scheme. Prosecutors stated that he conspired with others to submit fraudulent claims for medical and dental services that were never performed. In return, Williams received at least $300,000 in kickbacks. In addition to the prison sentence, Williams was ordered to pay $2.5 million in restitution to the NBA’s plan. Other players implicated in the scheme include Glen Big Baby Davis and Tony Allen. The fraud allegedly took place between 2017 and 2021.
