RCC’s Strategic Plan Aims to Boost Post-Secondary Education in NC

Robeson Community College (RCC) recently hosted a myFutureNC meeting to contribute to the state’s goal of 2 million residents attaining a post-secondary degree or credential by 2030. The meeting brought together business leaders, organizations, colleges, and school systems to collaborate on achieving this ambitious target.

RCC President Melissa Singler expressed her gratitude to the attendees, emphasizing the importance of their work in helping the college and the state reach the attainment goal. The meeting focused on RCC’s strategic planning process, with participants using their smartphones to provide feedback through an interactive word cloud initiative.

One of the key questions raised during the meeting was regarding regional collaborations. The participants overwhelmingly recommended the Public Schools of Robeson County (PSRC), along with industry partners, other community colleges, and employers. This collaborative approach aims to provide students with more opportunities and resources for success.

Another critical topic discussed was the addition of new career, technical, or short-term health programs at RCC. The attendees suggested a diverse range of programs, including dental assistant, peer support specialist AI, home healthcare and nursing, and nuclear medical technical courses.

The focus of the meeting was employability and defining student success at Robeson Community College. Attendees recognized the significance of addressing the labor shortage and bridging the skills gap in the region. Singler expressed that everyone, including businesses, industries, government, and non-profit organizations, must be involved in this endeavor to make it successful.

Patricia Hammonds, director of the Lumber River Workforce Development Board, stressed the importance of the work being done daily to provide resources and support to students and the community. The goal of myFutureNC aligns with their ongoing efforts to ensure individuals are equipped with the skills necessary for gainful employment.

Dr. Robert Locklear, in his presentation, highlighted the need to attract businesses to Robeson County by focusing on education. By strengthening partnerships among public schools, community colleges, and universities, the county can create an environment that entices businesses to invest. Locklear revealed that there are currently 2,373 job openings in Robeson County, underscoring the need for individuals to acquire the required skills and qualifications.

Singler reminded the audience that achieving the myFutureNC goal would be a marathon, not a sprint, and would require sustained effort and collaboration over the next seven years. The work being done at RCC and throughout the community will play a vital role in closing the skills gap and creating a prosperous future for Robeson County.
