Former President Donald Trump appeared in federal court in Washington on Thursday to face charges related to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Prosecutors in Fulton County, Georgia, are also expected to announce charging decisions soon regarding their investigation into efforts to undermine the election results in that state.
Trump’s lawyer, John Lauro, has claimed that his client’s actions were protected by the First Amendment right to free speech. Lauro also alleged that the charges are an attempt to interfere with the 2024 presidential election, where Trump is believed to be a leading contender for the Republican nomination.
While the arraignment took place before U.S. Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadyaha, the case will ultimately be overseen by U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who has gained a reputation for her tough stance against the Capitol rioters. In November 2021, she ruled against Trump’s assertion of executive privilege to block the release of documents to the U.S. House’s Jan. 6 committee.
The trial is expected to proceed promptly, according to Smith, although Lauro has stated intentions to slow the case down for further investigation.
