Greek Citizens Protest Illegal Beach Operations, Seek Free Access to Beaches

Greek citizens in the island of Paros have taken to the beaches to protest against illegal beach operations and demand free access to the shores. The Paros Citizens’ Movement for Free Beaches organized the demonstration to raise awareness about numerous violations, including the unauthorized placement of sunbeds and operation of beach bars without permits.

One of the main concerns highlighted by the protesters is the excessive presence of sunbeds, occupying up to 80-85% of the tiny Santa Maria Beach. Despite the Paros Municipal Council’s decision not to lease any part of the beach due to its designation as a Natura site, the unauthorized sunbeds persist.

These protests come as the number of complaints regarding illegal beach operations across Greece continues to rise. On the island of Serifos, the mayor, Kostas Revinthis, filed a complaint against an illegal beach bar operation. He stated that the business was operating without the necessary permits and had even been shut down by the municipal authority, only to reopen later.

Authorities are taking these violations seriously, with prosecutors reminding everyone of circular number 10/4-5-2023, which emphasizes the importance of implementing the law and guarantees the public’s free access to the beaches. It seems that some businesses are taking advantage of loopholes in the legislation, hindering the public’s enjoyment of the coastline.

This issue is not new, as three years ago, the Greek Tourism Ministry introduced a draft bill aimed at facilitating the development of diving and golf tourism. However, concerns were raised by environmentalists, including WWF Greece, who warned that the bill would result in catastrophic effects and described it as a premeditated crime. Article 34 of the shoreline bill, in particular, was accused of leading to the mass legalization of violations both on land and in the sea.

In 2021, an amendment was made to the shoreline use law, allowing room rentals to include the right to use the beach for sea sport equipment rental, placement of tables and chairs, umbrellas, and recliners without restrictions. While this amendment aimed to promote tourism, it has inadvertently given businesses more leeway to ignore regulations and infringe upon public access to beaches.

The efforts of the Paros Citizens’ Movement for Free Beaches and similar organizations highlight the importance of preserving the natural beauty of Greece’s coastlines and ensuring that residents and visitors can freely enjoy them. It is crucial for authorities to take action against illegal beach operations and enforce existing laws to protect these valuable natural resources.

By addressing these violations and working towards fair and lawful practices, Greece can maintain its reputation as a sought-after tourist destination known for its stunning beaches and rich cultural heritage. The struggle for free access to beaches is a reminder that responsible tourism practices are vital for the sustainability of local ecosystems and the enjoyment of both residents and visitors alike.
