Coimbatore: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Salem division has successfully apprehended a five-member gang involved in a series of thefts at Podanur railway station. The gang has been stealing laptops and copper wires in recent weeks, causing significant financial losses. However, the RPF has managed to recover stolen goods worth ₹4.7 lakh, including seven laptops valued at ₹3.5 lakh and copper wires worth ₹1.2 lakh.
According to sources within the RPF, the gang targeted laptops belonging to the railway department, attempting to sell them through local electronic stores and online platforms. This criminal activity prompted the RPF’s crime intelligence branch to launch a thorough investigation into the theft cases. Their efforts involved gathering phone call records, monitoring online sales of laptops, identifying local dealers of used electronic items, and analyzing CCTV footage from the station premises.
During their investigation, the RPF team discovered that stolen laptops were being swiftly listed on online platforms for sale shortly after their disappearance from the station. In a smart move, the team acted as potential customers, extracting the contact information of the thieves in the process. On Tuesday, they successfully apprehended the five members of the gang. In a surprising twist, they also arrested a local store owner who had purchased three laptops from the thieves, tarnishing their reputation as well.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohamed Tharik (21), S Sanjay (19), A Abu Thahir (22), M Abdul Kathar (22), and N Balaji (27), who also happened to be the dealer of used laptops. Following their arrest, they were presented before a judicial magistrate and subsequently transferred to Coimbatore Central Prison, where they remain in judicial custody.
This successful operation by the RPF serves as a reminder of their commitment to safeguarding railway property and maintaining law and order within their jurisdiction. The diligent efforts of the crime intelligence branch have ensured that stolen laptops and valuable copper wires have been recovered, providing a significant relief to the railway department. The arrest of the gang members and the local store owner involved in the illegal trade offers hope that such criminal activities will be curbed in the future.
The RPF’s swift action and comprehensive investigation into the theft cases demonstrate their efficiency and dedication in protecting public property. By analyzing various sources of information, the RPF successfully identified the culprits and apprehended them, setting an example for other law enforcement agencies. This achievement not only reflects the effectiveness of the RPF but also highlights the importance of public cooperation in combating crime.
The recovered laptops and copper wires will now be returned to their rightful owners, allowing the railway department to restore normal operations. The RPF’s commitment to maintaining a secure environment for passengers and preserving the integrity of railway infrastructure is evident through these commendable efforts.
Moving forward, it is crucial for citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities promptly. By working together, the community and law enforcement agencies can continue to protect public property, prevent thefts, and deter criminals from engaging in illegal activities.
