Jaydev Unadkat, the veteran Indian pacer, made a triumphant return to the One Day International (ODI) side after almost a decade, picking up a wicket in his fifth delivery. Having missed the first two matches of the ongoing three-match ODI series against West Indies, Unadkat replaced Umran Malik in the playing XI for the series decider in Trinidad on August 1.
Unadkat wasted no time in making an impact as he was called upon by captain Hardik Pandya in the 11th over. By then, Mukesh Kumar had already taken down the top three West Indies batters, putting pressure on the home team. Unadkat complemented Mukesh’s efforts by dismissing Keacy Carty for just 6 runs, reducing West Indies to 35/4. It was a well-executed delivery, angled outside off stump, which Carty attempted to drive without proper footwork. The ball took an edge, and Shubman Gill at first slip took a fine low catch, giving Unadkat an early wicket in his comeback game.

Meanwhile, standing in as captain for the series decider, Hardik Pandya led Team India from the front and helped them set a formidable total of 351/5 in 50 overs. Pandya showcased his ability to finish innings sensibly, reminiscent of the legendary MS Dhoni’s style. He played a patient and responsible knock while Ishan Kishan (77), Shubman Gill (85), and Sanju Samson (51) provided strong support with their distinctive batting styles.
Reflecting on his well-constructed half-century during the mid-innings break, Sanju Samson shared his thoughts, saying, It felt really great to spend some time in the middle and score some runs and contribute for the team. I had different plans for different bowlers. I wanted to use my feet and dominate the bowlers by disturbing their line and length. It is a challenging thing, having to adjust to playing in different batting positions while representing the country.
In contrast, West Indies found themselves struggling at 88/8 after 23.4 overs, facing an uphill battle against India’s dominant performance.
It was an impressive comeback for Jaydev Unadkat, who made an immediate impact by taking a wicket in his fifth delivery. With India’s strong batting display and Unadkat’s early breakthrough, the team looks poised to secure victory in the series decider.
