Scoil na gCeithre Máistrí, a primary and secondary school in Athlone and the surrounding areas, has been recognized for its outstanding efforts in promoting biodiversity. The school recently participated in the Arcadia Creative Climate Awards, where students showcased their creative ideas for improving the environment.

Sponsored by Arcadia Retail Park and organized in collaboration with Cllr Frankie Keena’s ‘Junior Mayor’ initiative, the Arcadia Creative Climate Awards aim to encourage local schools to think about environmental conservation. Scoil na gCeithre Máistrí took on the challenge by focusing on how they could increase and promote biodiversity in their community.

The pupils from Scoil na gCeithre Máistrí embarked on various initiatives to champion biodiversity. They collaborated with LWETB (Longford Westmeath Education and Training Board) to build a solar tunnel on the school grounds, allowing children and community members to grow their own fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, they constructed an ‘Ostáin do na Féithidí’ or a ‘Hotel for Insects,’ providing outdoor spaces for insects to thrive.

In addition to these physical structures, the students organized events such as a ‘Jumble Sale’ to promote biodiversity and encourage recycling. The aim was to instill a sense of reusing and repurposing items instead of discarding them. Lessons on climate change, global warming, recycling, and other relevant topics were taught in classrooms, and pupils created informative booklets displayed throughout the school.

Scoil na gCeithre Máistrí also implemented the Bus na gCos scheme, where students walk part of the way to school rather than relying solely on cars. This initiative not only reduces fuel usage but also raises awareness about sustainable transportation methods.

The school’s commitment to recycling and raising awareness of biodiversity was further demonstrated by some fifth-class pupils who participated in Junk Kouture. Their creative projects emphasized the importance of recycling and showcased their dedication to preserving biodiversity.

Another notable endeavor was the formation of the ‘Kayak Council’ at Scoil na gCeithre Máistrí. Through the ‘Kayak with Friends’ initiative, students had the opportunity to explore the local lake, islands, and observe the native flora and fish in Athlone.

Additionally, lessons on the essential role of bees in biodiversity and their impact on the Earth’s climate were included in the curriculum. The principal even visited each class, from Junior Infants to Sixth Class, to introduce them to bee hives and educate them about their significance.

Scoil na gCeithre Máistrí’s dedication and exceptional efforts were recognized at the Arcadia Creative Climate Awards. The school received the awards for Best Biodiversity and Best Research, highlighting their remarkable achievements in promoting and preserving biodiversity.

Cllr Frankie Keena, the founder of the Junior Mayor Initiative, expressed his gratitude to the participating schools for their outstanding contributions. He commended the students for their extensive knowledge and confidence in presenting their projects to the judges and the public. Additionally, he thanked the principals and school staff for their support and commitment to the students’ endeavors.

Scoil na gCeithre Máistrí’s success at the Arcadia Creative Climate Awards serves as an inspiration and a testament to the power of collective action in protecting and promoting biodiversity. Their innovative initiatives and educational efforts demonstrate the positive impact schools can have on the environment and the future of our planet.
