The Delhi High Court has dismissed a public interest lawsuit filed by BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Upadhyay challenging the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and State Bank of India’s (SBI) notifications that allow for the exchange of withdrawn ₹2,000 notes without any proof of identity. The PIL claimed the move was arbitrary and stated that the RBI and SBI should only accept deposits of such notes to help identify people holding black money and disproportionate assets. However, the court dismissed the PIL, stating that the government’s decision is a policy decision and it is not the court’s place to act as an appellate authority over government decisions. The move to withdraw the ₹2,000 notes is not a decision towards demonetisation, the court said.
