Government Negligence Leads to Bursting of Rs 15 Lakh Artificial Lake in Petlawad
The negligence and carelessness of the government have resulted in the bursting of a Rs 15 lakh artificial lake in Petlawad, Madhya Pradesh. The lake was constructed by the Rural Engineering Services (RES) department and was located in Jhosar village under Jhabua district.
The responsibility for building the Nistar Talab (lake) in the region lies with the water resources department. However, under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) scheme, the RES department had taken on the construction of artificial lakes, costing between Rs 10-60 lakh.
Apart from the lakes, the RES department was also involved in various construction works, including Kapildhara Road, buildings, and check dams. Typically, a deputy engineer from RES would be assigned to oversee the construction work of 10-12 gram panchayats under the block.
However, in such cases, the work is usually carried out by contractors using machines. MLA representative Ashish Kumar, citing gross negligence and mismanagement, has written a letter to the commissioner of the panchayat and rural development department, urging a fair investigation into the construction of the lake. He pointed out that contractors and machines are often seen at MNREGA worksites, but no officials pay attention to the situation. This lack of oversight led to the collapse of the newly-constructed lake in Jhosar village.
The bursting of the artificial lake raises concerns about the quality of construction carried out by the RES department.
