Chelsea Set to Sign French Defender Axel Disasi in €45m Deal
Chelsea Football Club is set to secure the services of highly-rated French defender Axel Disasi from AS Monaco in a reported €45 million deal. The transfer agreement was revealed by journalist David Ornstein, who confirmed that Chelsea had reached an agreement with Monaco for the 25-year-old center-back.
Disasi is considered one of Ligue 1’s top center-backs and his potential arrival at Stamford Bridge could see him reunite with former teammate Benoit Badiashile. Chelsea’s pursuit of Disasi comes after an unfortunate injury to French defender Wesley Fofana, who suffered an ACL injury earlier this month and is expected to be sidelined for a significant period.
The injury setback prompted Chelsea to seek reinforcements for their defense, and Disasi appears to be an ideal replacement for Fofana. Currently, Mauricio Pochettino’s options at right center-back are limited to Thiago Silva, 38, and Trevoh Chalobah. However, Chalobah has also been linked with a potential departure from the club this summer.
Disasi, a French international, predominantly operates as a right-center back and could form an excellent partnership with either Levi Colwill or Badiashile in the upcoming season. The 25-year-old made a total of 49 appearances for AS Monaco in the 2022-23 campaign, contributing to 10 clean sheets and scoring six goals.
During Chelsea’s preseason preparations in the United States, Dutch defender Ian Maatsen has been one of the standout performers. Maatsen, who impressed during a loan spell with Burnley last season, has already scored two goals and provided one assist during preseason. Pochettino expressed his satisfaction with Maatsen’s versatility and quality, emphasizing his value to the squad.
With Chelsea poised to bolster their defense with the arrival of Disasi, the club looks determined to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming season. The signing of the French defender would provide a much-needed boost to Pochettino’s defensive options and solidify the team at the back. As the new campaign approaches, Chelsea fans can eagerly anticipate the arrival of Disasi and the impact he will make at Stamford Bridge.
