Former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, is in critical condition and currently on mechanical ventilation at Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata. The 79-year-old politician was admitted to the hospital on July 29 with a lower respiratory tract infection and Type II respiratory failure.
According to a statement by Dr. Rupali Basu, the MD and CEO of Woodlands Hospital, Bhattacharjee’s overall clinical status is critical but stable. The medical team at the hospital is providing relevant conservative medical management and closely monitoring his progress.
The multidisciplinary medical team comprises specialists from various fields including medicine, critical care, cardiology, pulmonology, infectious diseases, endocrinology, general medicine, anesthesiology, and internal medicine. They are working together to ensure the best possible care for Bhattacharjee.
News of his hospitalization has garnered attention and good wishes from across the political spectrum. Union Minister Anurag Thakur expressed his prayers for the speedy recovery of Bhattacharjee, acknowledging the former Chief Minister’s contributions to West Bengal. Sukanta Majumdar, the president of West Bengal BJP, also visited Bhattacharjee at the hospital to convey his concerns and well-wishes.
Bhattacharjee, representing the Communist Party of India (Marxist), served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 2000 to 2011. He played a significant role in shaping the state’s political landscape during his tenure.
