Rookie Carroll’s Stellar Performance Leads Diamondbacks to 4-3 Victory Over Mariners

PHOENIX (AP) — In a thrilling game on Saturday night, rookie sensation Corbin Carroll showcased his impressive skills, propelling the Arizona Diamondbacks to a comeback victory over the Seattle Mariners with a final score of 4-3. Carroll’s outstanding performance solidified his position among the National League’s leaders in home runs, triples, and stolen bases.

Carroll’s impact extended beyond his powerful hitting. With his aggressive baserunning tactics, the rookie caused constant trouble for the Mariners, earning him a spot near the top of the basepath leaderboard. In the eighth inning, Carroll initiated a rally with a walk off reliever Andrés Muñoz. He advanced to second base after Muñoz’s balk and swiftly stole third while the Mariners’ infield appeared flat-footed. With one out, Seattle pulled their infield in, hoping to stifle Arizona’s momentum. However, Dominic Canzone shattered that hope by delivering a chopper that bounced through, breaking the tie and securing the go-ahead run.

D-backs manager Torey Lovullo praised Carroll’s role in the victory, stating, It’s just a classic case of being prepped and being ready. He’s capable of doing that against any pitcher at any time. It was the difference in the game.

Carroll’s exceptional stats for the season include 32 stolen bases and 21 home runs, showcasing his formidable power and speed combination. Canzone, another rookie making his mark in just his 14th big league game, contributed with two RBI singles, including the crucial hit in the eighth.

The win was much-needed for the struggling Diamondbacks, who have had a tough July with a record of 7-15. On the other side, the Mariners saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. Hoping to further boost their performance this season, Seattle missed an opportunity to reach four games above .500 as they went 0 for 11 at the plate with runners in scoring position.

Despite the Mariners’ offensive struggles, they had a chance to score in the ninth inning after Cade Marlowe hit a one-out triple. However, José Caballero struck out for the second out, and J.P. Crawford walked before Scott McGough struck out All-Star Julio Rodríguez to end the game.

Seattle managed to score twice on sacrifice flies before Tom Murphy’s solo home run in the fourth inning, which gave them a 3-0 lead. Murphy has been on fire recently, with extra-base hits in four consecutive games and a total of seven homers in his past 20 games. However, the resilient Diamondbacks quickly fought back, scoring two runs in the fourth inning and tying the game in the fifth thanks to Carson Kelly’s RBI single.

The Diamondbacks’ rookie right-hander Brandon Pfaadt displayed a solid performance, allowing three runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. Pfaadt’s recent starts have shown improvement after a challenging start to his big league career. The D-backs’ bullpen, including Kyle Nelson, Miguel Castro, Kevin Ginkel (4-0), Andrew Chafin, and McGough, combined to pitch 3 1/3 scoreless innings, securing the win.

On Sunday, the three-game series between the Diamondbacks and Mariners will conclude. The Diamondbacks will send RHP Merrill Kelly (9-4, 3.12 ERA) to the mound, while the Mariners will counter with RHP Luis Castillo (6-7, 3.02 ERA).
