Tragedy struck in Fiji as a New Zealand toddler drowned after falling off her parents’ boat. The heartbreaking incident occurred in Musket Cove on the west side of Fiji on Friday. The 13-month-old girl, Mahina Toki, was believed to have been strapped into a harness on the deck, watching a movie while her parents were cooking in the boat’s galley. However, when they returned to the deck, they discovered that the child was missing. Tragically, she was later found in the water and despite efforts to revive her, she could not be saved.

Mahina’s family, who hail from Great Barrier Island, is said to be part of a New Zealand island cruising community. In the wake of this devastating incident, a fundraiser has been set up to support Mahina’s grieving parents, Mark and Kiri. The initiative was organized by a member of the group, Grace Palos, who described the toddler as a beautiful, happy, smiling child who loved life on the boat.

According to Palos, Mahina’s mother, Kiri, expressed that her daughter had eyes that looked into your soul from the day she was born. The family is currently in the process of returning to their home in Great Barrier Island, as they grapple with the profound loss of their precious child.

In a touching display of support, the island cruising community has shown immense compassion and generosity. The fundraiser has already raised over $16,000 AUD, highlighting the solidarity and empathy of the worldwide cruising community.

The incident deeply affected the island cruising community, with the nearby rally participants stepping in to offer assistance. Medical professionals, including a paramedic, doctor, two nurses, and a midwife, rushed to the scene, equipped with all the necessary tools and supplies. Despite their tireless efforts, they were unable to save Mahina’s life.

The Fijian Police are currently investigating the tragic incident, seeking to understand the circumstances surrounding the toddler’s fall from the boat. The tight-knit community has called upon fellow sailors to embrace their loved ones and provide solace during this difficult time. The worldwide cruising community is united in their grief and determination to help bring little Mahina home with love and compassion.

This heartbreaking news serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and safety measures when on board a boat, especially when young children are present. The incident has shaken the island cruising community, prompting reflection on the necessary precautions to prevent such a tragedy from recurring. As the investigation unfolds, support and sympathy pour in from far and wide for Mahina’s grieving family, encompassing the collective sadness and heartache felt by the worldwide cruising community during this difficult time.
