Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) in Bihar has witnessed a remarkable surge in its tiger population, recording a 75% increase as stated in the latest Status of Tigers, 2022 report released by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change. VTR, Bihar’s solitary tiger reserve, has now reached a significant milestone with a population of 54 tigers.
According to the report, this number reflects a seven-fold growth in the tiger population over the past 12 years. Comparatively, while the countrywide tiger count has doubled over the last decade, VTR’s numbers have increased significantly more. In the previous tiger census from 2014-2018, VTR saw an increase of only three tigers, whereas in the latest estimation from 2018-2022, the numbers rose by an impressive 23. This achievement has been praised by Bandana Preyashi, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, who referred to it as highly commendable.
The tiger population in VTR experienced a gradual increase over the years. In 2010, there were only eight tigers, followed by 28 in 2014, 31 in 2018, and now a total of 54 tigers in 2022.
Recognizing the efforts and success of VTR, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) awarded the reserve a rating of good for its management effectiveness evaluation (MEE). In the MEE summary report, VTR scored a commendable 77.97%, securing the 38th position out of the 51 assessed tiger reserves. These accolades solidify VTR’s commitment to wildlife conservation and habitat management.
This year marked the fifth cycle of the nationwide tiger estimation exercise in India. With an increase in the number of tigers to 54, VTR secured the 23rd position out of the 51 tiger reserves assessed in the last census (2022). As such, VTR holds a significant place in the conservation of these majestic creatures.
Adding to its list of achievements, VTR received a certificate of appreciation under the India Biodiversity Awards 2021 for its contribution to the conservation of wildlife species. Furthermore, in 2017, it was honored with the prestigious RBS Earth Hero Award in the Earth Guardian category.
