Badrinath National Highway in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli District Faces Severe Damage Due to Heavy Rainfall

A significant portion of the Badrinath National Highway (NH-7) in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district has been washed away, resulting in major disruptions for motorists. The Lambagad drain’s water level rose alarmingly due to heavy showers that have been pounding the region since late Friday night, leading to the damage. Chamoli Police reported that approximately 50 meters of the highway have been affected by the incessant rainfall.

Authorities have attributed the damage to falling debris and the rising water level of the Lambagad drain caused by the continuous downpour. The worst-hit area is near Nandaprayag and Pursari on the Badrinath National Highway, where debris has blocked the road. Pictures shared by Chamoli Police on social media platforms show a large heap of debris obstructing the thoroughfare.

This incident follows another recent setback when a 70-meter stretch of the National Highway near Gauchar town in Chamoli district was damaged due to heavy rainfall. The breach caused significant disruptions to traffic, prompting officials from the relevant departments to commence restoration work urgently.

The National Highway near Gauchar, Kameda was blocked due to a breach spanning about 70 meters of the road. The concerned departments and executive bodies are working tirelessly to restore normal traffic movement on the road as quickly as possible, stated an official familiar with the matter.

Efforts are now underway to repair the washed-out portion of the Badrinath National Highway, with concerned authorities working diligently to minimize the inconvenience caused to commuters. However, it is anticipated that the restoration process may take some time given the extent of the damage.

The situation has raised concerns among local residents and travelers who heavily rely on the highway for transportation. The disruption is particularly inconvenient for those needing to reach important destinations or engage in business-related activities. Tourists visiting the region have also been affected, as their travel plans have been disrupted due to the damaged road.

The authorities are urging travelers to exercise caution and seek alternative routes until the repairs are completed. They have assured the public that every effort is being made to expedite the restoration process and ensure the highway is operational at the earliest.

Instances of excessive rainfall causing damage to infrastructure are not uncommon in hilly regions like Uttarakhand. The local administration, along with various government agencies, are continuously working to develop effective measures to mitigate such incidents and control the impact on people’s lives.

The incident on the Badrinath National Highway in Chamoli district serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by heavy rainfall in the region and the need for better infrastructure management. It is essential for the concerned authorities to implement long-term solutions to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure the safety and convenience of travelers in the area.
