Central Team Visits Assam to Assess Flood Damages and Urges Release of Funds

A high-level Inter-ministerial Central Team (IMCT) comprising seven members from different ministries of the Union government recently conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the flood damages in Assam, India. The team visited various districts, including Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Biswanath, Baksa, Barpeta, Chirang, Bajali, and Nalbari to evaluate the extent of the devastation caused by the floods.

The Central Team, led by C.G. Rajini Kaanthan, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, held discussions with senior officials of the state government to review the details of the damages. The meeting took place at the Chief Secretary’s Conference Hall in Janata Bhawan, Dispur.

During the assessment, the team observed the damages and losses suffered by the affected districts of Assam. Consequently, the state government urged the Central Team to consider releasing the necessary funds for repair and restoration works. To facilitate this, the state government will submit a final Flood Memorandum highlighting the extent of damages to the Central government.

Assuring the state government, Kaanthan confirmed that the team will promptly submit a report to the Central government, including recommendations for action. The Central Team also advised that the submission of real-time assessments of infrastructure damages should be accompanied by geo-tagged photographs with time stamps. Additionally, they surveyed the damaged houses and affected agricultural areas resulting from the flood and emphasized the importance of including the final assessment of damages in the Flood Memorandum.

The visit of the Central Team and their subsequent recommendations provide crucial support to the state government in accessing the necessary funds for repairing and restoring the flood-affected areas of Assam. The detailed report, expected to be submitted soon, will aid the Central government in understanding the urgency and extent of the damages caused by the floods. This assessment will also ensure that the appropriate measures are taken to aid the affected communities and help them rebuild their lives.

Assam has been grappling with severe flooding, which has resulted in substantial losses in terms of both infrastructure and livelihoods. The floods have caused immense hardship for the residents of the state, displacing many and disrupting normal life. The efforts made by the Central Team to assess the damages and recommend the release of funds will provide much-needed relief and support to the affected communities.

The Central government, in coordination with the state government, will continue to prioritize the rehabilitation of those affected by the floods. By providing the necessary resources for repair and restoration works, steps will be taken to ensure that the affected areas are made habitable again and that the affected people can resume their lives with dignity.

The devastating floods in Assam serve as a reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive flood management strategies. Adequate measures must be implemented to prevent and mitigate the impact of such calamities in the future. As the government works toward implementing long-term flood management plans, immediate relief and support are crucial to ensure the well-being of the affected communities. The Central Team’s visit and subsequent recommendations mark an important step in this direction.

Assam’s resilience and the united efforts of both the state and Central governments will undoubtedly assist the affected communities in overcoming the challenges posed by the floods. By working together, they will be able to rebuild and restore the affected areas, ensuring a brighter and more secure future for the people of Assam.
