Uvalde, Texas – Kimberly Rubio, the mother of a victim from the Uvalde school shooting in 2022, has announced her run for mayor in an effort to advocate for gun legislation. The tragic incident took the life of her daughter, Alexandria Lexi Rubio, at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022. Since then, Rubio has become a dedicated gun violence prevention advocate and even established a nonprofit organization called Lives Robbed to push for changes in gun legislation.

Rubio shared her candidacy announcement in a tweet that featured an article from the Uvalde Leader News. She has a longstanding connection to the local paper, having worked there in various roles since her teenage years. Expressing her grief over the loss of Lexi, Rubio vowed to honor her daughter’s life through her actions, stating that this is only the beginning of her efforts.

The current mayor of Uvalde, Don McLaughlin, has also chosen to step down and run for a seat in the Texas House. Having served as mayor since 2014 and winning re-election three times, McLaughlin was a guiding force in the aftermath of the May 2022 shooting. The tragedy saw a local teenager take the lives of 19 students and two teachers at Robb Elementary School.

Rubio’s competition so far includes Cody Smith, a banker and former mayor, who announced his bid for mayor to the Uvalde Leader-News. During the July 25 city council meeting held at Uvalde City Hall, Smith briefly addressed his candidacy and appealed for voter support.

Following the upcoming election on November 7, the new mayor will assume office on the 24th day after the general election and serve a four-year term.
