Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter (or X, as it’s been rebranded), recently announced a controversial plan to scrap the light mode feature on the platform. Musk, well-known for his active presence on Twitter, stated that the platform will soon only have dark mode, as he believes it is superior in every way.
Currently, Twitter offers users the option to choose between light and dark modes, with a Dim option that provides a dark blue background. However, if Musk’s statement holds true, these choices will no longer be available, and dark mode will become the default and only theme.
While dark mode has its advocates, there are also many users who prefer light mode or rely on the automatic switching between modes during the day and night. Removing light mode could also have an impact on accessibility, as reading text in daylight with dark mode enabled can be more challenging.
Some Twitter users expressed their concerns about the change, suggesting that dark mode could be made the default option without eliminating light mode altogether. However, given Musk’s track record of frequent changes, it’s difficult to predict his ultimate decision.
Musk’s goal for Twitter, now X, is to transform it into a super app that not only serves as a social network but also offers enhanced communication and payment functionalities, similar to China’s WeChat. For instance, Twitter plans to introduce the ability to make and receive calls within the platform.
The timing of the transition to dark mode remains uncertain. It’s unclear whether this change will indeed occur or if Musk will reconsider.
