The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has requested a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Manipur gang-rape video case. Following the arrest of the seventh accused, including a juvenile, on Monday, the MHA has decided to refer the case to the CBI. The incident occurred on May 4, and a 26-second video of the incident went viral on July 19, leading to widespread outrage.
In addition to seeking a CBI investigation, the MHA plans to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court requesting that the trial of the case take place outside of Manipur. Government sources have confirmed that the mobile phone used to record the video has been recovered, and the person who shot the video has been apprehended.
The Manipur Police have arrested a total of seven individuals in connection with the case, including the juvenile. The first arrest was made on July 20, followed by three more arrests later that day. The fifth accused, a 19-year-old, was arrested on July 22.
One of the women seen in the video is the wife of an ex-army man who served in the Assam Regiment and fought in the Kargil War.
In related news, Union minister RK Ranjan Singh’s residence in Imphal was attacked for the second time in two months by protestors demanding that he address the situation in the ethnic strife-affected state. However, no one was present at the house during the attack, and little damage was done.
The Ministry of Home Affairs’ decision to refer the Manipur gang-rape video case to the CBI indicates an effort to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident. By seeking a trial outside the state, the government also aims to create an environment conducive to justice. The recovery of the mobile phone used to record the video and the arrest of the person responsible for filming it are significant breakthroughs in the case.
The arrests made by the Manipur Police and the ongoing investigation reflect the authorities’ determination to ensure that all those involved in the heinous crime face legal consequences. The case has sparked national outrage, highlighting the urgent need for justice and the protection of women’s rights.
Additionally, the attack on Union minister RK Ranjan Singh’s residence underscores the growing unrest and demand for accountability in Manipur. The repeated attacks on his residence, coupled with demands for the restoration of internet services, indicate the gravity of the situation and the public’s frustration.
As the CBI takes over the case and investigations continue, it is crucial that the focus remains on delivering justice for the victims and ensuring the safety and security of women in Manipur. The government’s efforts to secure a fair trial outside the state demonstrate its commitment to transparency and impartiality.
The Manipur gang-rape video case calls for a cohesive and swift response from authorities, not only to deliver justice in this particular incident but also to send a strong message that such heinous crimes will not be tolerated. It is imperative to hold the perpetrators accountable and work towards creating a society where women are safe and protected.
