On May 24, 2023, the Prime Ministers of Australia and India, Anthony Albanese and Narendra Modi, met in Sydney for official talks. During their meeting, the pair signed the Australia-India Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement, an agreement that will strengthen the mobility between the two countries. To further deepen their relationship, they also announced the terms of reference for a new Australia-India green hydrogen taskforce.
The Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement will promote the exchange of students, graduates, researchers, and business professionals between Australia and India. The two countries will also work together to fight human trafficking, while increasing cooperation between law enforcement authorities.
The Australia-India Green Hydrogen Taskforce aims to develop cooperation on clean energy transition. During the meeting, the prime ministers also discussed trade and investment, and agreed to conclude the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement.
Narendra Modi is the 14th and current Prime Minister of India. His election as Prime Minister in 2014 marked the historic return of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to power in India. He champions nationalism and is responsible for several economic and social reforms in India.
Anthony Albanese is an Australian Labor Party politician who is the 30th Prime Minister of Australia since April 2021. In 2019, he was appointed Leader of the Opposition, and has since campaigned on a social justice platform and focused on growing the economy, creating jobs, and making sure that the benefits are felt by everyone.
