Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has announced the allocation of a second round of grant funding for nonprofit organizations in the city that provide abortion and abortion care services. The Abortion Protection Fund, in collaboration with the Baltimore Civic Fund, will offer grants of up to $30,000 to eligible Baltimore-based organizations. The application process for qualified nonprofits will remain open until August 18.
Mayor Scott emphasized that women’s right to make their own health decisions is a fundamental aspect that should not be compromised. He stated that while other parts of the country face challenges in reproductive freedom, Baltimore City will continue to support comprehensive reproductive healthcare. The additional funding aims to uphold these values and cater to the needs of individuals seeking reproductive care.
This announcement comes after the first round of grants was awarded in 2022, shortly after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The initial grants, ranging from $8,000 to $50,000, contributed to increased access to abortion services by enabling grantees to hire additional staff, expand in-person and medication abortion telehealth visits, reduce waiting times for abortion services, and cover costs associated with travel and medical treatment.
More information, including the Request for Applications and the application portal, can be found on the Baltimore Civic Fund’s website.
Overall, the initiative to allocate funding for abortion services in Baltimore reflects the city’s commitment to ensuring reproductive rights and access to healthcare. By supporting nonprofit organizations, the mayor and the city aim to strengthen reproductive healthcare services and address the needs of individuals seeking abortion care.
