Tamil Nadu Dairy Federation Increases Prices of Paneer and Badam Mix, Triggering Consumer Backlash

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], July 25 (ANI): The Tamil Nadu Co-Operative Milk Producer’s Federation, popularly known as Aavin, has faced public outrage after announcing a price hike for paneer and badam mix in Chennai and its suburbs.

In a recent notification, the Federation stated that the revised retail prices would be implemented immediately. The price of one kilogram of paneer, previously priced at Rs 450, has now been increased to Rs 550. Similarly, the prices of 500 grams and 200 grams of paneer have risen from Rs 250 to Rs 300 and Rs 100 to Rs 120, respectively.

Furthermore, the retail price of badam mix (200 grams) has also been raised from Rs 100 to Rs 120.

The decision has not gone down well with consumers who are expressing their outrage over the sudden increase. The price hike comes at a time when people are already grappling with the economic impact of the ongoing pandemic.

It is interesting to note that in May, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, raising concerns about the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (Amul) procuring milk from Aavin’s milk shed area in the state. Stalin highlighted the need to protect each cooperative’s milk-shed area, as cross-procurement would undermine the spirit of ‘Operation White Flood.’

Aavin has been a significant player in the dairy industry in Tamil Nadu, serving as the apex cooperative marketing federation in the state. However, with the recent price hike, consumers are questioning the Federation’s decision and expressing their discontent.

As of now, consumers will have to bear the burden of the increased prices, which have been met with widespread criticism. It remains to be seen how the Federation will respond to the public outcry and if any changes will be made to the revised prices.
