After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival is returning on Sunday, July 30, from 12 to 6 p.m. at the Minami Community Center in Santa Maria.

Dating back to the post-World War II era, the GBC festival has been a cherished tradition for the Japanese American community, holding immense cultural significance. From captivating performances to delicious Japanese cuisine, this family-friendly event has something for everyone to enjoy.

Attendees can look forward to a variety of entertainment options, including a captivating performance by Ichimi Daiko from 4:10 to 4:50 p.m. The mesmerizing Bon Odori dance will take place from 5 to 6 p.m., allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the rich Japanese culture. Martial arts demonstrations and a captivating bonsai exhibit will also be featured, offering a glimpse into traditional Japanese practices.

The tantalizing aromas of Japanese food will fill the air, providing a delectable culinary experience. Pre-sale dinners consisting of teriyaki chicken, rice, and edamame are available for $17. Additionally, there will be a wide selection of sushi, udon, and other mouthwatering dishes available for purchase on-site. Whether you’re a fan of sushi or eager to try traditional udon, the festival will satisfy all cravings for Japanese cuisine.

In addition to the exciting entertainment and food offerings, visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction and raffle. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $5 each, offering a chance to win incredible prizes. The top ten prizes are cash rewards, with the first prize amounting to an impressive $1,500. This provides an enticing incentive to join in the festivities and potentially walk away with a significant reward.

The 2023 Obon Festival promises to be a joyous celebration, bringing together the local community in Santa Maria. The Guadalupe Buddhist Church invites people of all backgrounds to immerse themselves in the captivating performances, indulge in delicious Japanese food, and enjoy the chance to win exciting prizes.
